Short answer

To buy USDT in Georgia, use a Cryptomat ATM (USDT on ERC-20 or TRC-20 for lari cash), an NBG-registered exchange such as Cryptal (Solana, ERC-20, TRC-20, BEP-20), or GEL P2P on Binance, Bybit or OKX, where ads ran about 2.58–2.60 GEL per USDT in our check. TRC-20 is the network most local deals use.

Stacks of gold coins with a dollar symbol, representing Tether USDT

In Georgia, USDT is the coin that does the work. Property deposits in Batumi, cash desks swapping crypto for dollars, freelancers paid from abroad: most of it moves as Tether. It’s also the only coin with a deep lari P2P market. If you want to buy USDT in Georgia, the purchase itself is easy. The part people get wrong is the network, because the same USDT exists on several blockchains that don’t talk to each other.

This guide covers where to buy USDT for lari, which network to choose, what it costs to move, the freeze risk most guides skip, how to cash out, and what we know (and don’t) about GEL₮, Tether’s planned lari stablecoin.

USDT networks: which one, and what it costs

USDT is a stablecoinStablecoinA token designed to track a currency, usually the US dollar. USDT and USDC aim to stay worth $1. pegged to the US dollar. Tether issues it on more than a dozen blockchains. What matters in Georgia is which of them your counterparty accepts and what gas token you’ll need to move it.

Source: Tether’s supported-protocols page, Cryptomat and Cryptal. Tether has stopped issuing on Omni, Kusama, BCH-SLP, EOS and Algorand, so ignore old guides that mention them.

ERC-20 is the most expensive to move. Gas is paid in ETH and rises with network traffic, and exchanges usually charge their highest USDT withdrawal fee on this network.

TRC-20 looks cheap, but there’s a catch for self-custody users. On Tron, a USDT transfer consumes “Energy”, and ordinary accounts get no free Energy, only a small daily Bandwidth allowance. If you don’t have staked or rented Energy, the network burns TRX from your wallet to cover it. No TRX, no transfer. Keeper (formerly Tonkeeper) offers a “Battery” feature that it says makes Tron transfers up to 50% cheaper.

TON and Solana usually cost cents to move, but you need a small balance of Gram or SOL for gas. About 1.4 billion USDT circulate on TON, which is built into Telegram.

BEP-20 USDT is not issued by Tether. It’s a Binance-Peg token, bridged and backed by Binance. It works, but you carry Binance’s risk as well as Tether’s.

Why TRC-20 is the local default

Ask a Tbilisi or Batumi exchange office for an address and you’ll almost always get a Tron one. Nobody publishes statistics on this, so what follows is our analysis. Every venue that touches lari supports TRC-20: Cryptomat, Cryptal, the P2P boards and the desks. It’s cheaper and more predictable than ERC-20. The Russian- and Ukrainian-speaking OTC desks that serve property buyers have long quoted in “USDT TRC-20”, which created a network effect. And Tronscan makes it easy for both sides to check that a transfer landed.

None of that makes TRC-20 the right choice for every transfer. If your exchange charges less on Solana, or your counterparty uses TON, use that. Ask first, every time.

Where to buy USDT in Georgia

Cryptomat ATMs. Around 150 machines in seven cities list USDT on both ERC-20 and TRC-20 next to BTC, ETH, LTC and BCH. A secondary guide says not every machine actually dispenses USDT, so check on screen. Fees aren’t published; the same guide reports 6–12% including the spread for crypto ATMs generally. Our ATM guide covers locations and ID thresholds.

Cryptal and other registered exchanges. Cryptal (NBG 0002-9404) supports USDT on Solana, ERC-20, TRC-20 and BEP-20, with free crypto deposits on every network. Lari top-ups are free by bank transfer, BOG Pay or TBC Pay, 2% by Georgian card or Apple Pay or Google Pay, and 1% through PayBox. PayBox terminals also let you buy through Coinmania, WhiteBIT, CityPay and Bitanica. Our list of licensed exchanges shows all 43 registered providers.

GEL P2P. This is where most lari volume sits. Binance lists the most banks (Bank of Georgia, TBC, Liberty, BasisBank, Credo, Terabank, Hash Bank and others), OKX and Bybit fewer. When we last checked, ads clustered around 2.58–2.60 GEL per USDT. Read the P2P guide before your first trade.

Bybit Georgia and WhiteBIT Georgia. The two global brands on the NBG register (0019-9404 and 0007-9404). WhiteBIT takes lari directly through TBC and Hash Bank. Bybit also powers the crypto section of the TBC app, which launched with about 30 assets; we couldn’t read the asset list, so check in the app whether USDT is there and whether it can be withdrawn.

Global exchanges by card. If you pay with a foreign card, CEX.IO is one option: operating since 2013, with US money-transmitter licences (NMLS 1804170) and UK FCA registration (FRN 1007192). It takes Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay and Google Pay in USD, EUR or GBP, but has no lari wallet and no P2P.

Buy USDT

Step by step: buying USDT safely

Choose the network first

Before you buy anything, ask whoever will receive the USDT which network they accept. For Georgian desks and developers’ payment agents it’s usually TRC-20TRC-20USDT issued on the Tron network. Cheap and fast transfers, which is why most OTC and property deals in Georgia quote TRC-20.. If you’re only holding, pick the network that’s cheapest to withdraw on your exchange.

Prepare a wallet for that network

Copy a receiving address on that exact network. For TRC-20 in your own wallet, buy a little TRX as well, because Tron burns TRX to pay for token transfers.

Pick a route and verify

Cash at a Cryptomat, a registered exchange funded by bank transfer, or GEL P2P. Complete the identity checks; registered VASPs must apply KYCKYCKnow Your Customer: identity checks (passport, selfie, sometimes proof of address) that licensed services must run before you trade. rules.

Pay in lari

Insert cash, top up for free by bank transfer, BOG Pay or TBC Pay, or pay the P2P seller from an account in your own name, only inside the order window and only to the details shown there.

Test, then send the rest

For anything large, send a small test first. Check it on Tronscan or Etherscan, confirm the recipient sees it, then send the balance.

Buying USDT in person in Tbilisi and Batumi

If you’d rather hand over cash at a counter, the NBG register lists offices for you to check. In Batumi, where all eleven Cryptomat machines are buy-only, registered names include Digital Currency (several points around Sherif Khimshiashvili and Kaczynski streets), PLEX (including Orbi City block C), Crypto Change Batumi on Gorgiladze Street, and branches of Alltrust.me, Werty, Stellex and Bitrust. In Tbilisi, Alltrust.me lists an office on Giorgi Atoneli Street and a branch at the international airport, and dozens of other registered providers have city-centre addresses. We couldn’t verify any desk’s spread, minimum or opening hours, so ask for a quote before you count out notes.

Registered providers are required to display their NBG registration confirmation at the counter. Ask to see it, and check the number against the register. City-by-city details are in our Batumi and Tbilisi guides.

Freeze and blacklist risk

USDT isn’t censorship-proof. Tether’s terms let it freeze tokens you hold, blacklist any address, and hand assets to law enforcement when a government directs it to. In practice this hits people who receive coins from a tainted address: a scam wallet, a sanctioned exchange, a hacked account. Your address can be frozen along with the funds.

Turning USDT into lari

The usual exits are the same rails in reverse: sell on GEL P2P to a buyer who pays your bank account; sell on Cryptal to a card or bank account; use WhiteBIT’s GEL withdrawal to TBC or Hash Bank; or walk into a registered exchange office in Tbilisi or Batumi, where the fee is built into the rate and payouts come in lari, dollars or euros. Cryptomat’s roughly ten sell-enabled machines are another exit; check on the screen which coins a machine buys back before you rely on it.

Before you accept any of these offers, hold the quote against the benchmark explained in the next section. For full details on bank questions and payout times, see how to sell crypto for lari, and for in-person desks the OTC guide.

For property, remember the legal route: Georgian businesses can’t accept crypto as payment, so a registered VASP converts your USDT and the developer receives dollars or lari. Our real estate guide and Batumi apartment guide explain the steps, and the car guide does the same for vehicles.

USDT to GEL: how the rate is formed and how to check it

There is no official USDT to GEL rate. The National Bank of Georgia sets an official lari rate for the US dollar, not for Tether. Every lari price for USDT you’ll see is built from two parts: the dollar’s lari rate, plus or minus a premium added by the market or by whoever is quoting you.

Three prices, one benchmark

  • The NBG dollar rate is the anchor. Tether aims to keep one USDT worth one dollar, so a fair lari price for USDT sits close to the official USD/GEL rate published on nbg.gov.ge. The converter at the top of this page takes the lari rate from the National Bank’s API and the USDT price from CoinGecko, directly in your browser, and shows the NBG dollar rate under the result.
  • Lari P2P ads are the market price. Sellers on Binance, Bybit and OKX set their own prices. When we checked, ads clustered around 2.58–2.60 GEL per USDT, and a secondary test found a 500 GEL purchase on Binance released in about four minutes, within roughly 0.5% of the official dollar rate. Read each ad’s limits and bank list: one merchant accepted orders of up to 260,000 GEL, while many ads are far smaller.
  • Desk and machine quotes are retail prices. Exchange offices build their margin into the rate, and Cryptomat doesn’t publish fees at all; a local guide puts all-in ATM costs at 6–12%.

Checking a quote yourself

Multiply your USDT by the NBG dollar rate: that’s your reference amount in lari. Then ask the provider for the exact lari you’ll receive once every fee is taken, rather than a rate with a commission to subtract. The gap divided by the reference amount is your real cost. Taking dollars instead is simpler still, because every dollar short of your USDT amount is the fee. Do this for two or three providers within the same hour, since P2P prices and desk quotes move during the day.

The CoinCodex “GEL” trap

Search for “USDT to GEL” and some converter pages, CoinCodex among them, show one USDT worth anything from about 78 to 833 “GEL”. That isn’t the lari. GEL is also the ticker of Gelato, an unrelated token, and those pages price USDT against it. Since one USDT is worth a few lari, any figure in the tens or hundreds is a ticker clash, not a market move. If GEL₮ does launch, expect one more source of confusion: a lari stablecoin with a ticker that looks a lot like the lari’s.

GEL₮: Tether’s lari stablecoin

On 25 May 2026, Tether and the Government of Georgia announced plans for a lari-pegged stablecoin, reported as GEL₮ or “GELT”, to be developed together with the National Bank of Georgia. That’s as far as the confirmed facts go. The announcement didn’t name an issuer or a launch date, we found no press release about it on nbg.gov.ge, and we don’t know of any exchange, ATM or app where you can buy it. If and when it launches, we’ll update this page.

The legal framework already exists. NBG Order No. 52/04 of 6 March 2026 sets the rules for a VASP issuing a stablecoin, including the defined “lari stablecoin”: the NBG’s prior written consent, reserves of at least 100% kept apart from the issuer’s own assets, and, under later amendments reported by EY, monthly reserve reports.

USDC as an alternative

USDC is Circle’s dollar stablecoin. Cryptal lists it on Solana, ERC-20 and BEP-20. Lari P2P liquidity for USDC is much thinner than for USDT, so it’s harder to cash out locally, but some people prefer it for its regulatory standing in the EU. For the bigger picture, see our overview of coins in Georgia or compare with buying Bitcoin.

Selling USDT as a private individual isn’t subject to Georgian personal income tax under Public Decision No. 201; USDT received as salary is. See the tax guide.

Questions people ask

Which USDT network should I use in Georgia?

Use whatever network the recipient accepts. TRC-20 is the most common in local OTC and property-related deals because every venue supports it and it costs less than ERC-20. Cryptomat ATMs sell USDT on ERC-20 and TRC-20; Cryptal supports Solana, ERC-20, TRC-20 and BEP-20 but not TON. Sending on the wrong network can lose funds.

What is the USDT to GEL rate in Georgia?

It tracks the dollar's official lari rate plus or minus a market premium. In our check of Binance, Bybit and OKX P2P boards, ads clustered around 2.58–2.60 GEL per USDT. Use the live converter on this page and compare with the NBG dollar rate; ATMs and cash desks build their fee into the rate.

Can Tether freeze my USDT?

Yes. Tether's terms allow it to freeze tokens, blacklist addresses and hand assets to authorities when directed by a government. Receiving USDT from an address linked to crime or sanctions can get your own address frozen. Buy from NBG-registered venues and be careful with large transfers from strangers.

Is BEP-20 USDT real Tether?

Not directly. Tether doesn't issue USD₮ on BNB Smart Chain. BEP-20 USDT is a Binance-Peg token, bridged and backed by Binance rather than by Tether itself. It works on exchanges that support it, including Cryptal, but it carries extra counterparty risk.

What is GEL₮ and where can I buy it?

GEL₮ is a lari-pegged stablecoin that Tether and the Government of Georgia announced on 25 May 2026, to be developed with the National Bank. The announcement named no issuer or launch date, and we found no NBG statement about it. We know of no venue selling it, so treat any GEL₮ offer with suspicion.

Why do some sites show USDT to GEL in the hundreds?

Because they are not quoting the Georgian lari. GEL is also the ticker of Gelato, an unrelated token, and some converter pages, CoinCodex among them, price USDT against it, showing figures from about 78 to over 800. One USDT is worth a few lari, close to the official dollar rate. Use the National Bank of Georgia's dollar rate or a converter that clearly says Georgian lari.

How do I know if a USDT to GEL quote is fair?

Multiply your USDT by the National Bank of Georgia's official dollar rate to get a reference figure in lari, then ask the provider for the final amount you will receive after every fee. The gap is your real cost. Lari P2P ads can sit very close to the official rate, while machines and exchange offices build a bigger margin into their quotes. Compare two or three quotes before you send anything.
